Divorcing couples face mandatory counselling under overhaul of family law system
A new mediation service in Limerick will allow for the resolution of disputes at community level without resorting to the costly and stressful legal route.
This Pilot Project is a joint collaboration initiative between Mediation Northside and Co Wicklow Citizen’s Information Centre. The aim of the project is to provide a Community Mediation service in the county Wicklow area for a period of 6 months initiated by a group of Mediation Masters students from NUI Maynooth.
Mediation as an alternative to litigation continues to receive judicial support with several judges commenting on the benefits of this method of dispute resolution recently. At an event organised by the Irish Commercial Mediation Association, Ms. Justice Fidelma Macken of the Supreme Court said that “millions of Euro and hundreds of business days are being wasted each year in needless litigation when, in many cases, an alternative exists”. She pointed out that “mediation is a ‘no brainer’ for business particularly for the banking and insurance industries at the moment”.
The first in a series of mediation workshops on effective communications, organised by Mediation Northside, took place in the Northside Community Law Centre, Northside Civic Centre, Bunratty Road, Coolock, Dublin 17, on Friday April 16th, from 10am to 4pm.
