Community Law and Mediation in conjunction with Near FM and Coolock Library organised a free public lecture series on women and 1916, with a focus on social justice. The events took place in Coolock Library on 24th February, 2nd March and 9th March of this year and you can listen to the podcasts here.
The Social Welfare Appeals Office does not publish its decisions, apart from a selection of case studies published in its annual report. Community Law and Mediation aims to promote greater transparency in the Social Welfare Appeals system through this Casebase project. By providing a database of decisions, CLM aims to provide greater clarity on the reasons for an Appeals Officer’s decision, and to encourage the Social Welfare Appeals Office to take a consistent approach to cases.
We held a roundtable in 2014 on the lack of adequate legal support available to borrowers facing repossession and published a submission recommending a legal service allied to an entity such as MABS or the Legal Aid Board, to provide on-going case assistance as well as advice and representation. We welcome Friday's announcement by Minister Frances Fitzgerald that such a scheme is now in place for people facing losing their homes without access to legal services.
